PRO’s Role during the ‘Next Big One

Earthquakes are impossible to predict but, based on historical records, Metro Manila’s West Valley Fault is due for the “Next Big One” within our lifetime. A possible 7.2 earthquakes looms around the corner if the West Valley Fault along the eastern side of Metro Manila cracks, Renato Solidum Jr., Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) director warns.

The PRO ARMM, as prescribed in PNP IMPLAN SAKLOLO 2014 (Policing during Disaster) shall ensure that peace and order will be upheld during disaster, especially if and when the “Next Big One” happens.

Likewise, as a member agency of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council which is the principal policy-making and coordinating body on disaster risk reduction and management, the PRO shall conduct disaster risk reduction and management activities through a three stage approach:
- Pro-active Assessment Stage – Before and after alarm which consists of activities in preparation for disaster.
- Disaster Incident Management – Activation of different PNP task groups on disaster and support to RDRRMC in policing during disaster.
- Support to Recovery and Rehabilitation Efforts – includes law and order, security during relief operations and traffic management operations.

Moreover, PRO has also an active role in the Health, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Nutrition and Psychological Service; Food and Non-Food Items; Camp Management, Emergency Shelter and Livelihood; Logistics, Emergency Telecommunication; Search, Rescue and Retrieve; and Management of the Dead Clusters.
