Pull out of PNP Peacekeepers in United Nations Missions in Liberia(NR14-145)

The Philippines joins the international community in supporting the efforts to combat the spread of Ebola Virus Diseases (EVD) in West Africa. Also, it fully understands the health risks posed to Filipino nationals and Filipino peacekeepers that is why the participation of Filipino peacekeepers serving under the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) will be temporarily suspended until the Ebola outbreak has been completely contained. This decision is prompted by the notion that our government will have a difficulty in suppressing the spread of the disease should it arrive in the country.

Moreover, there is an immediate need for these peacekeepers to support and augment our country during disaster response operations.
As reinforcements, they will be addressing past natural and man-made disasters that occurred in 2013 as well as the recent damages wrought by Typhoons Glenda and Mario and the impending volcanic eruption of Mt. Mayon in Albay.

Nevertheless, the Philippines remains committed to UN peacekeeping operations to bring about global peace and stability. President Benigno S. Aquino III has tasked the National Council for United Nations Peace Operations (NCUNPO) to work closely with the UN to reassure the global community that the Philippines will not abandon its obligation to world peace and security.

Furthermore, the Philippines will abide by UN protocols on withdrawal of peacekeepers from the mission area. The dates of their arrival will depend on these protocols.
